Since the introduction of antiretroviral therapy using combinations of antiviral drugs belonging to different classes in 1996,the prognosis of HIV-1 infected individuals have improved significantly and sustained reduction in viral load can be achieved.However,with the widespread use of anti-HIV drugs and the accompanying problems of drug resistance,it has become more common for people who contract HIV to be infected with a dual-and triple-class multi-drug resistant strain.The transmission of drug resistant HIV has shown a steady increase since 1994,now reaching more than 20% of people newly infected with HIV in the UK and in some other parts of Europe.
