Surface-modified carbon black nanoparticle for electrophoretic display(EPD)applications

  Carbon black(CB)nanoparticle is widely used as the black pigment in electronic ink because of its great performance in light absorbing.However,CB is not directly suitable for EPD applications for its low density and poor solubility in organic solvents.Moreover,its relatively low electron-conductive ability acquires high applied voltage when operating it in electrophoretic display cells.To overcome these drawbacks,primary-sized carbon black(PCB)was chemically oxidized by potassium permanganate and subsequent esterification.By adjusting the concentration of charge control agent T151,modified carbon black nanoparticles showed electrophoretic movement at an applied voltage of less than 2 V,which demonstrated potential application for very low voltage operation in EPDs.Meanwhile,by introducing oleic acid as a capping agent in the esterification reaction,the stability of CB was improved.
