Melatonin is a naturally-occurring small molecule, serving as important secondary messenger in animals.Melatonin has drawn the attention of plant biologists since its discovery in plants in 1995.The fact of melatonin has effects on innate immunity in animals has led researchers to speculate that melatonin may also act on plant innate immunity.Although three studies have shown the protective role of melatonin in plant-pathogen interaction, the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms of melatonin-mediated plant innate immunity remain unclear.
