MADS-box genes encode a highly conserved gene family of transcriptional factors that regulate numerous developmental processes in plants. However, only little information regarding MADS-box genes, especially stress-related MADS-box genes is available in sweet potato. In this study, ten MADS-box genges, designated as IbMBP1-10,were cloned from sweet potato.Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the ten MADS-box genes exhibited different tissue-specificexpression profiles(such as fibre roots, storage roots and leaves),suggesting that they may have crucial and diverse roles during sweet potato growth and development. The expression of these MADS-box genes was checked under various abiotic stresses including NaCl,dehydration and high/low temperature and multiple hormones including ABA,ACC,GA3,MeJA and IAA.Ten MADS-box genes were induced by these treatments with differential/similar induction levels. In these ten genes,IbMBP9 and IbMBP10 were the most induced gene by NaCl and dehydration stress with more than 100 fold induction.IbMBP4 and IbMBP6 were induced by most auxins and cytomins.
