The buckling of submarine shield tunnel lining was investigated using the numerical analysis method, with respect to the influence of joints, and the ground conditions.Buckling may occur in the vicinity of a joint at lower hydrostatic pressure, in the form of single-lobe buckling, if the segment joint is sufficiently flexible.Earth pressure reduces buckling loads, while ground enhances the buckling capacity. For deep or submarine tunnels subjected to high water pressure, the issue of buckling should be considered at the initial stages, rather than merely as part of the common structural design.
