ACHIEVEMENT OF GRAGED COMPOSITE OF TIB2 CERAMIC TO TI ALLOY IN MULTISCALE AND MULTILEVEL BY REACTIVE

  Based on taking combustion synthesis in ultrahigh gravity field to prepare solidified TiC-TiB2 ceramic, a novel light-weight graded composite of TiC-TiB2/Ti-6Al-4V had been achieved in multiscale and multilevel miscrostructures by fusion bonding and atmoic diffusion.XRD, FESEM and EDS results showed that the ceramic was composed of fine TiB2 platelets,irregular TiC grains and a few of Cr metallic binder and Al2O3 inclusions, and fracture mode of the ceramic presented one mixed mode of intergranular fracture along TiB2 platelets with transgranular fracture in TiC grains, promising that fine TiB2 platelets as both the reinforcements and primary phases played a predominant role in toughening ceramic by inducing a intensive coupled toughening mechanism of crack deflection, crack bridging and pull-out, so flexural strength of 880 ± 55 MPa and fracture toughness of 16.5 ± 2.0 MPa·m0.5 were both presented in the near-full-density solidified ceramic with fine-grained microstructure.
