Internationally geared print media owe their successes to their communicative efficiency uponthe target audience. Beijing Review, one of the most influential such news magazines hosted byChina, must spare no effort to improve its performance in this regard, and this task is renderedeven more imperative in an era of globalization, despite the fact that the linguistic presentation ofthe Magazine has proven well accepted by a Western readership. In order to increase thecommunicative efficiency of featiire story reportage in Beijing Review, Chinese journalists muststrive to modify their style according to the preferences of their readers, who are much accustomedto a Western reportage style characterized by infotainment. Therefore, a comparative study on thestyle of Beijing Review and TIME is deemed necessary and revealing. The corpus for this thesiscompriscs 15 feature stories from each side during the same period. Hallidays functional grammarand Social Semiotic theory are selected as the rationale for this research. Advantages of thismethodological design lie in the social orientation of the framework, which is adequate andappropriate for analyzing feature reportage - a news discourse deeply enibedded in the socialcontext. Keynote stylistic differences will be identified in the tlree metaftinctional aspects -ideational, interpersonal, and textual -- between the two publications. Based on the findings in thethree functional aspects, a writing model is then proposed, which is expected to contribute to thecommunicative efficiency of feature reportage in Beijing Review Meanwhile, the authorsinitiative in using functional grammar to analyze English writing styles between native/non-nativespeghers may prompt insights for urther researches by means of the Grammar.
