In 2011, UNAIDS launched a global plan with WHO and other partners that aims to eradicate new HIV infections among children and keep their mothers alive by 2015. This global campaign has mobilized political leadership, innovation and community involvement to ensure that children continue to stay away from HIV while ensuring the health of their mothers. Between 2009 and 2013, pregnant women living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries doubled the proportion of effective antiretroviral drugs used to prevent the transmission of the virus to their children. This means that every 10 people in the world’s low- and middle-income countries are pregnant with HIV
