Lockwood et al. Reported encouraging results with the combination of adequate plasma exchange, steroid formulations and cytotoxic drugs in the treatment of Goodpasture’s syndrome. After treatment, pulmonary bleeding is reduced and renal function is improved (in patients without severe renal failure). Researchers at Hammersmith Hospital have proposed two possible mechanisms for these salient advantages: (1) antibodies against the glomerular basement membrane in the circulation have been removed. (2) reduce the inflammatory mediators such as fibrinogen and complement.
