故宫博物院现藏的清代晚期玩具中有泥制兔儿爷数个。其形像、色彩与民间玩具相同,俱是从市场购进,供小皇帝赏玩的。这些兔儿爷大者高约四十厘米(见封面),小者高约三十厘米。藏品历经数十载,表面已多有残损,色彩亦部份剥落,但它们依旧保持着原来生动的形像。兔儿爷又称彩兔,旧时为中秋节传统玩具,相沿成习。每临中秋,宫廷都要设宴、祭月。清代,每年八月十五内廷都在乾清宫设宴。在民间,更是户户拜月,家家盼团圆。兔儿爷的形像来自神话中月宫有嫦娥、玉兔的传说,玉兔捣药,为天下人治病去灾。每当中秋节临近,一些工艺匠人便用黄土加少量碎
