Jia Zhangke graduated from Beijing Film Academy with a major in Film Theory in 1997. It can be said that he has the identity of a cultural elite in the contemporary Chinese cultural structure. However, since 1995, Jia Zhangke has been engaged in the production of independent films outside the existing national film system. This marginalization has given him a pioneering spirit. When Jia Zhangke and his films were frequently awarded at various international film festivals, the mass media processed him as a fresh element of consumer culture in the first time, turning Jia Zhangke and his films into a new petty bourgeoisie. In 2004, China’s film reform, Jia Zhangke won the official director identity, and in the same year became the Central Academy of Drama teachers, officially returned to the mainstream culture. If we consider Jia Zhangke’s experience as a cultural event, its interpretation will enable us to explore the development of Chinese films in a more sober-minded manner.
