《万寿寺》是他生前写定的最后一部长篇小说,因而许多人也说,《万寿寺》,是迄今为止被小说编辑们认为不可超越的一部小说。《万寿寺》全然不关注故事,叙事本身成了件抒情的事:那篇小说从头到尾回旋不休,营造一种浪漫的旋律——当然不是夹入煽情的文字营造,而是靠叙事的节奏来营造的……总的来说,比较现代的小说家都主张叙事本身大有可为,叙事可以浪漫地运用,就如法国人说的,小说可以诗化。
