The Swiss National Radioactive Waste Storage Company (NAGRA) selected Wellenberg Hill as the site for the final repository of low-level radioactive waste. After 10 years of research evaluation of four different venues, the Wellenberg mountain in Nidwalden, central Switzerland, was chosen. At the end of June 1993, the Swiss national radioactive waste storage company made the proposal to the government that if various audit procedures are progressing well, the construction of storage facilities is expected to start by the end of this century. The company believes that the exclusion of the other three sites is not due to unsafe factors, but the Wellenerg site is chosen because of its obvious advantages in terms of geological safety and environmental impact. The Wellenberg site has a huge volume of solid clay-limestone rock that provides more maneuverability for the design of the storage cave. However, the cost of the Wellenberg site is expected to be higher than the other three sites.
