A recent survey report of the Japan Trade Promotion Association believes that Japan’s industrial sector is expanding its foreign procurement, especially its imports to neighboring countries, in order to reduce production costs and facilitate exports. According to the statistics of the association, from 1989 to 1993, Japan’s manufacturing industry’s external purchases grew at an average annual rate of about 15%, with imports of parts and semi-finished products increasing by 22% annually. In 1993, the import value of Japanese industrial products reached 125.14 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 6.9% over the previous year. Judging from the variety of imported products, the import value of semiconductors and other electronic components has surged by 33% over the previous year.
