The deep-drag sonar undersea shallow survey system developed by the French Petroleum Institute can obtain high-resolution images of the deep-sea plain seafloor structure and surrounding sediments up to 5,000 m deep. The system was operated by the SOL 120 study vessel (belonging to Beicip, a subsidiary of the French Petroleum Institute), controlled remotely by a winch on board and adjusted for speed control to keep it close to the sea floor. The main components of the system are mounted on the head of the tow body. Nasal stabilizers and thin and heavy carrier cables used in conjunction with floating mounts provide sufficient stability for drag towing. The operator sorts the received sonar data to keep the dragline a certain distance above the sea floor. Within the maximum sonar range (750 m to 1,500 m), the system has a strong ability to penetrate sediments up to a depth of up to 100 m. The depth of penetration depends on the type of sediment. The device’s multiplex digital transmission link has a transmission rate of 128 kilobits per second.
