The results of field tests of ground explosives in the foothills of Alberta prove that the quality of the information obtained from ground explosions can be effectively improved by combining the design of sources and the arrangement of internal detonation points. The combined source design for best data quality at the foothills of Alberta is a simple 50 kg cross-shaped ground linear source detonated at each end. There is no significant difference between the ground initiation of a cross-shaped combined source and initiation of a few meters above the ground. In a crossover design, improper excessive charge levels can cause overcharge explosions. The multiple cover profiles obtained from the reciprocal joint sources show that this method can obtain high-quality seismic data in the inverted fault zone of Alberta.
