在祖国大规模社会主义工业化的战线上,金属矿藏的勘测列为前哨的地位,因而,金属矿物的研究和鉴定亦就更为重要了。研究和鉴定矿物的方法很多,但金属矿物中大部分是不透明的,所以在研究方法方面就不能和透明矿物完全相同。自从偏光显微镜发明以后,矿物学家们就开始研究透明矿物的光学性质,其方法是将透明矿物切制成薄片,用透过光的方法研究的。最初,人们也曾试图从同样的方法去研究不透明矿物,但由于不透明矿物磨至极薄,亦不能透过光线,所以用透光的方法进行研究是不可能的了。

Since the invention of polarized light microscopes, mineralogists began to study the optical properties of clear minerals by slicing clear minerals and studying them with light. Initially, people also tried to study opaque minerals from the same method. However, since opaque minerals are extremely thin and can not be transmitted through the light, it is impossible to study them with light.
