Postmodern plays put forward new and unique requirements for stage directors. It is more experimental and the boundaries that make up a show have also changed. Language is no longer the primary means of communication, and music, sound, movement, and other visual elements are explored as meaningual means. This article discusses the main communication systems of postmodern theater directors: language, vision, hearing, smell, body and so on. It also examines twenty symbolic systems that directors can use to give meaning to communication.
