以抗寒、耐旱和耐盐碱的野生扁蓄豆(2n=2X=16)与地方良种肇东苜蓿(2n=4X=32)的Co_(60)r射线等诱发突变体作杂交亲本,获得远缘杂交成功。杂种表现双亲中间型的形态特征。有孕性的杂种为异源四倍体(2n=4X=32),属于远缘有性杂种。经三代选育,结实性逐代增加。株高和单株草重高于扁蓄豆,同于肇东苜蓿。抗逆性强于亲本肇东苜蓿。育成抗逆性较强的中间型苜蓿新品种是可能的。
