塔铭,是佛教石刻的一种。《语石》云:“释氏之葬,起塔而系以铭,犹世法之有墓志也。然不尽埋于土中,或建碑,或树幢。其纳诸圹者,或用横石,修一之,广倍之;或方,径不逾尺。”由此可知,塔铭或埋于塔内,或嵌置于塔上。虽然其文体、内容及埋设目的与墓志较为相近,但形制及浓厚的宗教色彩、置放方式的特殊性,故多单独作为一类石刻加以研究。古代的塔铭又有塔下铭、灵塔铭、像塔铭、龛铭、塔记、石室铭等多种别称,但实际上都应属于塔铭一类。近年来,笔者参加国家文物局重点科研课题——《隋代墓志铭汇考》的工作,搜集到金石书籍记载及出土的隋代塔铭资料共34方,根据“有舍利的为舍利塔,无舍利
