打开任何一本英文版的《文学术语词典》,出现在首页的第一个词大都是“荒诞”。这不是因为荒诞很特殊,而是因为它的头两个字母分别是a和b。这样,absurd(荒诞)如此排位也就顺理成章了。既然提到了词典,我们就先来看看词典中的解释。波尔蒂克(C.Baldick)的《牛津文学术语词典》(Oxford ConciseDictionaryof LiteraryTerms)中说:“荒诞(absurd,the)这个术语来自于阿尔贝·加缪的存在主义,往往被用在人类无目的性的现代意识那里,关联着一个失去意义或价值的世界。”罗吉·福勒主编的
