282, No. 6258, British Medical Journal (1981) Editorial: Calcium antagonists are a new class of drugs that have proven useful in cardiology. Understanding the role of calcium depends on two physiological principles. In all excitable cells, including the myocardium, the heterogeneous distribution of extracellular and intracellular fluid electrolytes leads to higher intracellular potassium concentration and extracellular sodium concentration. Under quiescent conditions, the potassium permeability of the cell membrane is higher than that of sodium ions, and sodium ions are generally thought to penetrate the cell membrane through some sparse “channels”.
