Engineers at Scientific Applied International worked with researchers at the University of California and AT & T Bell Laboratories to develop a sensor that remotely monitors the airborne alcohol content of active vehicles. The alcohol analyzer is based on wavelength modulation spectroscopy and monitors the absorption of alcohol in the 1.392 μm wavelength range using a III-V family of distributed feedback-adjustable single-mode diode lasers. In operation, the injection current of the diode laser is sinusoidally modulated, causing the output of the laser to be swept across the absorption line of alcohol.
