On June 1, 2001, a seminar on the issue of water pollution caused by nuclear radiation was held in Almaty. The meeting was organized by the United States Laboratory of Rift Moor and the Institute for Non-proliferation of Kazakhstan. Some 30 experts from academia, academics, government representatives and officials from the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan attended the meeting. The meeting mainly discussed the issue of cooperation on eliminating nuclear weapons infrastructure and discussed other issues such as lack of fresh water, depletion of water resources and water pollution caused by industrial waste. The meeting concluded that inadequate water supply is the main reason that inhibits the republic’s development and utilization of its abundant mineral resources, energy and land.
