近代上海随着市民阶层的兴起与商业社会的形成,多种来自不同时空的文化形式在城市空间中博弈与交融,其间尤为引人注目的是报纸、杂志、书籍与市民的“新文化组合”的出现。19世纪中晚期,竹枝词在《申报》大量登载,几乎占报刊登载文学作品半壁江山,影响长达二十余年。同时,竹枝词又以各种单行本印行,不断扩大影响。竹枝词在近代城市空间中的发展,既出现了诗歌内部的现代转型,开拓出新的内容表达;又与其他文化形式一起进行着城市的文化实践,作为城市舆论的组成部分参与了近代城市舆论空间的建构。作为上海近代城市发展初期的一种文学样式,竹枝词在报章体与现代白话小说兴盛之前占据了报刊的大幅版面,记录文学、文化、社会的转型,深深地参与到城市文化的生产过程中。
