Johnson’s novel has always faced a lot of controversy. Some people praise him for broadening the aesthetics of black literature in the narrative of new slaves, while others criticize him for betraying the tradition of black nationalism. In fact, for Johnson, the aesthetic purpose and political purpose of literary creation are unified. No matter for the sake of creating the art of beauty or for a more righteous society, it is the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. True moral novels should lead people to eliminate estrangement, enhance mutual understanding and create conditions for building a harmonious and beautiful “friendship society.” Such a mission is both ethical and political, as it is not only intended to improve the inter-ethnic relations across races, classes, colors and geographies but also aspires to ultimately bring about social change.
