作为我国首批24座历史文化名城之一的福建泉州(古称“刺桐”),早在南朝时,即开始了与世界各国的友好往来。唐代,当地成为我国四大海外交通商港之一;宋元时期,则进入“涨海声中万国商”的黄金时代,刺桐港跨入世界四大名港行列。永乐3年(公元1405年),郑和率27000多人和近200艘福船等组成的船队,浩浩荡荡,由福建长乐开洋起锚。泉州海上交通博物馆建在闽南最大佛寺、唐代始建的开元寺东侧,外形很像一艘扬帆远航的大海船。博物馆设有“泉州湾古船陈列馆”、“海外交通史石刻陈列馆”和“古外销瓷器陈列室”等,这珍贵的文物、模型、生动、形象地浓缩了千百年来我国海上交通的来龙去脉。
