Paper calendering is an industrial finishing process that improves the smoothness of the paper surface and improves its gloss and printability. This paper discusses the effect of calendering on paper roughness at the microscopic and macroscale scales and the relationship between this surface modification and the fiber morphology. The experimental materials were two different fibers and their mixtures, and the optical profiler was used to characterize the surface properties of the paper. The experimental results show that calendering improves the surface properties of the paper over a range of measured scales and that these changes are relevant after a simple scale-up and this result is also valid for sheets made from mixed fibers.
