Objective To investigate the effect of benazepril, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), on urinary albumin and renal function in patients with hypertension. Methods 42 patients with hypertension were stopped using antihypertensive drugs for more than one week. Benazepril was used for 6 weeks. Blood pressure, urinary albumin, renin activity and creatinine clearance were compared before and after treatment. Results After treatment, the patients’ arterial blood pressure was significantly lower (P <0.001), urinary microalbuminuria and renin activity were increased (P <0.001), while other renal function indexes did not change. Conclusion benazapril in reducing arterial blood pressure at the same time have a role in reducing microalbuminuria, suggesting that the kidney has a protective effect
