安徽淮南煤田西部二叠纪含煤地层中, 煤层甲烷含量具有如下规律性变化:纵向上为中、下部高于上部, 横向上则为中部高, 东、西部低。本区煤的变质程度仅达气煤阶段, 甲烷含量与煤层埋深之间的正相关关系约在地表下垂深1 200 m 以浅反映得比较明显,尽管煤层甲烷的封闭条件比较好,但受构造的影响,局部降低了围岩的气密性,并形成了贫、富甲烷区段。根据对煤层甲烷资源的了解程度,选择了煤炭储量的类别、煤层甲烷含量的有效测点密度和评价验证钻孔中参数的获取情况这三项指标,将甲烷资源量划分为实证、控制、概略、远景和潜在5 个级别。本区三层主要煤层的甲烷资源量累计为200 .69 ×10 8 m 3 。总体来看, 本区煤层甲烷资源地面开发的前景不容过分乐观,但小范围开发可能取得一定的成效。开发试验区以张集井田最为合适。
