[Report in the United States “Nuclear Weekly” August 11, 1988, page 11] Japan requested the U.S. government to approve maritime transport within 30 years of the US-Japan nuclear cooperation agreement. The cooperation agreement came into effect on July 17 this year. According to U.S. officials, the request made the United States and Japan realize that before the early 1990s, designing, manufacturing, and testing of air cargo containers may not be possible. It is expected that the next shipment from Europe to Japan will be shipped. Officials from the U.S. Department of State, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other agencies are convening a meeting to discuss and plan for the approval of maritime transport.
