Rupert Gardner was born in Kent, South East England. He was educated at the School of Architecture in Canterbury and the Royal College of Art in London. Norman Foster and James Sterling were his mentors. Later, he worked in the Ricardo Bofilli architectural design office in Barcelona. In 1976, he settled in Sweden and founded the Rupert Gardner Design Studio in 1985. Each department of the Royal Academy of Arts only recruits eight students each year. This is a unique school. Gardner’s studies at the school influenced his attitude toward architecture and his role as an architect. “The college attaches great importance to architecture, it has a heavy learning task, and it is very strict. To make yourself understood and to adhere to your ideals requires debate and courage. I learned a way of thinking here and it gives me will. So that I can insist on the architecture I am pursuing.“ At present, Gardner’s studio employs 27 architects and interior designers and is mainly engaged in the interior design of offices, shopping malls, restaurants and private houses. Rupert Gardner prefers projects where every detail needs to be designed, and all parts of the project are computerized. With regard to the advantages and disadvantages of computer design, Gardner said: ”Computer graphics are more accurate, but it takes time, and only in large projects can we gain time and realize its potential through computers. In large-scale "concept projects In the case of Etelia, for example, the efficiency of computer design is very high because of all the details and
