Toshiba and Tokyo University scientists co-invented a CO 2 laser technology and successfully used it to weld the nuclear power plant fuel containers in operation. This type of welding requires remote control, high accuracy and low temperature to ensure safety and the minimum possible thermal effects of the enriched uranium within it.
