黄宾虹善于用墨,提出“五笔七墨”说,为书画创作奠定了理论基础。而其高徒林散之,则把他的用墨理论及方法运用于草书创作中,最终达到了“干裂秋风,润含春雨”的高境界,被尊为“当代草圣”。林散之对墨法的出色把握,得益于黄宾虹的谆谆教导及其自身超凡的艺术实践与领悟能力。黄宾虹在《画法要旨》中,把笔法、墨法、章法归结为书画之三要,并明确将用墨法之要逐一论述。
