According to foreign sources, there are 574,729 highways bridges in the United States, of which over 40% are structurally or functionally deficient. In particular, 22,064 reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridges were severely damaged, reducing the carrying capacity. In most cases, structural damage is caused by steel corrosion, especially on road bridges using de-icing salt. These damaged superstructures must be replaced with new systems to meet future traffic flow needs while still providing superior corrosion resistance over ordinary bridge engineering. A double T-beam bridge, internally and externally prestressed with glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) strands, is effective for this purpose
