Jia Yi was a very talented man in the West Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD).
During the reign of Emperor Wen, the emperor asked Jia Yi to be the tutor of one of his sons Liu Yi, who then was entitled with the Lord of Liang. The king hoped that his son could learn a lot from Jia Yi.
Jia Yi said: “Teaching your son knowledge is very important. But it is much more important to teach him how to be a righteous man. Hu Hai, the last king of the Qin Dynasty (227 – 201 BC), was taught by Zhao Gao. He taught Hu Hai all about cruel torture and imprisonment. All Hu Hai learned was about beheading and nose-cutting. Therefore, when Hu Hai became the king, he began to kill people mercilessly. He killed people just with the same empathy like cutting grasses and had no respect for human lives. Was Hu Hai a natural-born bad king? Of course not, he had not got a teacher to lead him on the right way. That’s the point.”
Emperor Wen agreed with Jia Yi and asked him to try his best to teach his son. Jia Yi did as the king wished and Liu Yi, who held great respect for Jia Yi, studied very hard. However, Liu Yi died from an accident when riding a horse. Jia Yi could not bear the pain and died one year later.
