Domestic (驯养的) horses now pull ploughs, race in the Kentucky Derby, and carry people. But early horses weren’t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.
Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication.
As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals’ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of horses would show more of these chosen characteristics.
Modernday horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn’t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads.
The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horses were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distances in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new form of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world.

To be concerned with proper child development is to be concerned about making sure that children have daily access to both mothers’ and fathers’ parenting.
If Heather is being raised by two mommies and Brandon is being raised by Daddy and his new husbandroommate, Heather and Brandon might have two adults in their lives, but they are being deprived of the benefits found in the unique influences found in a mother and father’s different parenting styles. Much of the value mothers and fathers bring to their children is due to the fact that mothers and fathers are different. And by cooperating together, they provide these good things that samesex caregivers cannot. The important value of these sexbased differences in healthy childdevelopment will be explored here.
The fathering difference is explained by fathering scholar Dr. Kyle Pruett of Yale Medical School in his book Fatherneed: Why Father Care is as Essential as Mother Care for Your Child. Pruett says dads matter simply because “fathers do not mother.” A father, as a male parent, brings unique contributions to the job of parenting that a mother cannot.
Likewise, a mother, as a female parent, uniquely influences the life and development of her child, as Dr. Brenda Hunter explains in her book, The Power of Mother Love: Transforming Both Mother and Child. Erik Erikson explained that father love and mother love are different kinds of love. Fathers love more dangerously because their love is more expecting than a mother’s love.
Dr. Pruett also explains that fathers have a clear style of communication with children. Babies, by 8 weeks, can tell the difference between a male or female communicating with them. Stanford psychologist Eleanor Maccoby, in her book The Two Sexes, explains mothers and fathers respond differently to babies. Mothers are more likely to provide warm care for a crying baby. Whether they realize it or not, children are learning at earliest age that men and women are different and have different ways of dealing with life, other adults and their children.
44. This passage is mainly about .
A. three experts’ different arguments
B. the introductions to the three famous books
C. mothers and fathers’ different parenting styles
D. the value of parents’ parenting in healthy childdevelopment
45. Which can replace the underlined phrase “deprived of” in Para.2?
A. provided
B. kept
C. turned down
D. taken away
46. Which of the following about Dr. Pruett is TRUE?
A. He thinks children need father care as well as mother care.
B. He thinks the samesex caregivers cannot bring children good things.
C. He thinks fathers have better communication with children than mothers.
D. He thinks fathers make more contributions to the job of parenting than mothers.

Nuclear energy is a controversial topic. There has been widespread public debate over it. It seems that the nuclear energy is either a gigantic disaster waiting to happen or the allpowerful way of the future.
It is often believed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society with a huge demand for commercial products of all kinds. Besides, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase assumes an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe nuclear energy provides an endless and economical source of power and that it is therefore fundamental for an industrially developing society. Among other advantages is that nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents a great step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the antinuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel.
However, opponents (people who oppose something) of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct danger not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Environmentalists argue in the long run nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Furthermore, it is questionable whether nuclear power is a cheap source of energy when everything is considered. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium (铀) in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market.
In spite of the case against nuclear energy above, nuclear energy programmes are expanding, which assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments in both sides, it seems that there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.
47. What’s the writer’s attitude toward nuclear energy?
A. Objective.
B. Negative.
C. Tolerant.
D. Apprectiative.
48. According to the opponents, which of the following is true of nuclear energy?
A. Primitive.
B. Unsafe.
C. Cheap.
D. Endless.
49. Some people believe that nuclear energy is the most important because .
A. nuclear power stations can be run and maintained by relatively few staff
B. it provides a perfect way out to increase employment
C. it represents a huge step forward in our scientific evolution
D. it can meet the growing demand of an industrially developing society

Boys, it seems, are sensitive guys when it comes to school. They need good teachers who know their subjects and treat them like people. They like learning things that connect with the real world. And, importantly, they respond more negatively than girls to what they see as unsatisfactory teaching.
Dr.Geoff Munns, associate professor at the School of Education in University of Western Sydney, has spent 20 years researching what connects boys to education, from preschool through to high school. “What appears to be the case with boys is that boys are more dependent on good teaching than girls appear to be.” he says.
That relationship between teacher and students is the key, especially for boys who may not think school is important. Losing that close connection when they go to high school creates problems for some boys.
Teaching, either by an older student or someone else from the community, can also be successful. This can be particularly important when boys are from a singleparent family headed by their mums. Having a good male role model appears to make a difference.
It found that boys enjoyed and engaged in school more if they had some say in what they were doing in the classroom. Opportunitieswork in groups, doing projects and problembased learning kept the students more active. Access to computers and information technology also helped, but it had to be used well. “Not oldfashioned type of things but advanced things like getting the kids to do a website design, working with computers at a high level,” Dr.Munns explains. Asking boys what they want can make a huge difference to their classroom experience.
They want teachers who know their subjects thoroughly and can teach them really well, and who take a personal interest in them and show them some respect. And teachers should be capable of having a good understanding of their feelings as well. And in turn the boys will listen and do their best. And they will be prepared to do the “boring work”.
Parents also have a role in a boy’s experience of school. Taking an interest in their schoolwork and what’s happened during the day sends a message that school is very important. So does being involved with the school. Asking boys questions—such as, “What did you learn? What did you find interesting at school today? Did something funny happen at school today?”—can start a conversation. Often that’s the best way to find out if your child is enjoying school or striking problems.

My Opinion on Cheating in Examinations
In the recent final examinations, a few students were caught cheating by teachers and many schoolmates held a heated discussion about students’ cheating in exams. As to this phenomenon, I would like to voice my own opinions.
As students, we often take examinations at school, but sometimes we have too many examinations which are too difficult for us. On the other hand, some of students are lazy and don’t work hard at their lessons. So when taking examinations, they sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers. From my point of view, it is wrong to cheat in examinations because it breaks the rules of schools. We students should be honest and try to get good results by
studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What’s more, we should improve our study methods and get well prepared for examinations.
In a word, it is good results achieved by hard work that is worth taking pride in. Only by making efforts can our achievements be well respected and acknowledged.

46. Which of the following about Dr. Pruett is TRUE?
A. He thinks children need father care as well as mother care.
B. He thinks the samesex caregivers cannot bring children good things.
C. He thinks fathers have better communication with children than mothers.
