China successfully launches its crewed spacecraft Shenzhou-12 on June 17, which sent three astronauts to its space station core module Tianhe for a three-month mission. It is China’s seventh crewed mission into space and the first one during the construction of its space station.
The three astronauts are commander Nie Haisheng, a 56-year-old veteran who participated in the Shenzhou-6 and Shenzhou-10 missions, Liu Boming, 54, who was part of the Shenzhou-7 mission, and Tang Hongbo, 45, who embarks on his first space mission.
The plan circulated by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council and formulated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Justice, is the eighth of its kind, aiming to create a sound legal environment for building a modern socialist China.
The country is looking to significantly improve legal awareness among the public and law-based social governance, as well as to build a more integrated system of law education by 2025, according to the plan.
Stressing the importance of publicizing the Constitution and the Civil Code, the plan notes that activities should be held on studying the Constitution, while the content of the Civil Code should be included in the national education system.
The document puts forward several measures to nurture a socialist culture of rule of law, such as creating high-quality art works and productions, enhancing the preservation of the legacy that the CPC led the Chinese people to develop the rule of law in the revolutionary period, and strengthening international communication and cooperation in the field.
The application of new technologies and media is encouraged to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of people, thus improving the accuracy and effectiveness of the program.
The circular calls on volunteers to address senior citizens’difficulties in using smartphones to accommodate their needs in traveling, receiving medical services and consumption.
Those aged 60 or above numbered 264.02 million on the Chinese mainland, according to the last national census in China.
The current health literacy rate indicates 23 out of 100 people have acquired healthcare knowledge and skills, Mi Feng, a spokesperson with the National Health Commission, told a press conference.
Aiming to promote people’s health, China launched an action plan for the Healthy China initiative in mid-2019 through 15 special campaigns, Mi said, adding that the popularization of healthcare knowledge was the first action.
A total of 1,065 individuals were first included in a national-level expert pool for the popularization of healthcare knowledge, and provincial-level expert pools have also been established across the country over the past two years, said Mi.
He added that such actions, frequent and widespread, also played a supportive role in helping China win the battle against COVID-19.
In the survey, 60.5 percent of 1,513 parents think that more attention should go to PE, while 51.9 said that both the quantity and quality of PE classes should be improved.
When commenting on their children’s PE lessons, 50.6 percent of the interviewed parents said PE lessons are sometimes substituted by extra classes teaching academic subjects.
Shi Dan from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, believes her child’s physical education is somehow overlooked at school.
Some interviewed parents also suggested improving the training of PE teachers, organizing more sports competitions at school and altering the examoriented physical education evaluation system.
Xinjiang’s permanent population had reached 25.85 million by October 2020, a rise of about 4.04 million from the country’s sixth population census in 2010, the latest census data released by the regional statistic bureau on June 14 showed.
The population growth rate in the region over the past decade was 13.14 percentage points higher than the country’s average.
According to the data, the stable population growth sprouted from the region’s economic and social development. In recent years, Xinjiang has attracted a large number of people to invest and do business in the region, thanks to its stable environment.
Of the total permanent population in Xinjiang, the Han ethnic group accounts for 42.24 percent, while ethnic minorities comprise 57.76 percent. The Uygur ethnic group alone accounts for 44.96 percent.
Compared with the sixth population census, the population of ethnic minority groups in Xinjiang increased by 14.27 percent, more than 1.86 million, data showed. The growth rate was 4.01 percentage points higher than that for ethnic minorities across the country.
The number of people with a college education rose to 16,536 per 100,000 from 10,635 per 100,000 people in 2010, the census data showed. This is 1,069 people more than the country’s average.
The operation from May to August, per a decision of the Cyberspace Administration of China and three other government agencies, aims to protect individual privacy as hidden camera-related illegal practices have severely infringed upon privacy and become an issue of concern to many. Retail sales of consumer goods upheld stable expansion in May, up 12.4 percent year on year and 0.81 percent month on month. The two-year average growth stood at 4.5 percent.
Online retail sales expanded 24.7 percent year on year in the first five months of the year, registering an average two-year growth of 14.2 percent.
Surveyed urban unemployment rate came to 5 percent in May, 0.9 percentage point lower than the same period last year. Compared with the April level, it was 0.1 percentage point lower.
The volume increased 30.3 percent from the same period in 2019.
Foreign investment in the service industry came in at 381.9 billion yuan ($59.7 billion) during the period, up 41.6 percent year on year.
Power consumption by primary and secondary industries rose 13.9 percent and 11.5 percent from a year ago, respectively, while that by the tertiary industry surged 23.4 percent. The secondary industry contributed to around 65 percent of the total increase, the NEA said.
Residential power consumption registered a 5.6-percent yearly increase in the month.
In the first five months of the year, China’s power consumption totaled around 3.23 trillion kWh, up 17.7 percent year on year.
Effective on August 1, the reform aims to promote the efficient use of resources and the high-quality development of new-energy industries, such as photovoltaics and wind power, the National Development and Reform Commission said in an online circular.
Electricity generated from new renewable energy projects should match local coal-fired power generators on price, or set its grid price through market trading in the year, according to the document.
Starting in 2021, electricity prices for newly approved offshore wind and solar power projects will be decided by the pricing authorities of provincial-level regions where they are located.
The circular also encourages local governments to roll out policies to support the sustainable and healthy development of renewable energy industries.

The Chinese Government started implementing its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) this year, which will drive growth in its spending on IT in the coming years, it added.
The Yangtze River Delta region, home to the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui, as well as Shanghai Municipality, will see their IT spending reach over 518 billion yuan ($80.9 billion) in 2021, the report predicted.

While spurring the development of key industries, ecommerce will effectively bridge the gap between western regions and central and eastern parts of the country, Pan Helin, an expert in economics at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, said.

Banking institutions, accounting for the lion’s share of the financial industry, reported a 9-percent rise in total assets, while companies in the securities industry saw their combined assets jump 22.1 percent year on year by the end of the period.

Helping the Elderly
Chinese authorities have issued a circular to start a nationwide campaign this year to help senior citizens cross the digital divide, Xinhua reported on June 15. IT Spending
Spending on information technology (IT) will grow 10 percent year on year to reach over 2.21 trillion yuan ($346.1 billion) in China in 2021, according to a report released by global market research firm International Data Corp.
