Xiamen is one of the five special Zones in our country and the only one in the Central Government that gives certain policies to implement the Freeport. At a time when the all-dimensional and multi-level reform and opening up pattern in the country has basically taken shape, what measures will Xiamen take to speed up its development? 1994 is the year of reform. Will the vertical adjustment of interests in the reform affect the horizontal adjustment of interests and thus affect the enterprises Development Reporter With these questions, the reporter interviewed Comrade He Lifeng, Vice Mayor of Xiamen City, in charge of foreign trade and economic cooperation. Reporter: Vice Mayor Ho, it is understood that Xiamen’s foreign trade has developed rapidly in recent years. Could you please introduce the basic situation and characteristics in this regard? Over the years, Xiamen’s foreign trade has indeed developed rapidly. In 1980, the city’s foreign trade business was run unanimously by five specialized companies designated by the state. At that time, it had no import right to operate and its export volume was only 100 million U.S. dollars. Most of its exports were native animal products and grain, oil, and foodstuffs. Over the past decade or so since the reform and opening up, Xiamen’s foreign trade has risen rapidly. In 1991, the city’s foreign trade volume reached 1.731 billion U.S. dollars. The total value of exports (excluding the central and provincial foreign trade companies) stood at 955 million U.S. dollars, ranking the fourth among the planned cities in the country, accounting for 1.6% of the total national export value and the third among the five special economic zones. In 1992, the city’s import and export volume was 2.84 billion U.S. dollars, of which 1.77 billion U.S. dollars was exported, an increase of 64% and 85% respectively over the previous year. In 1993, the volume of imports and exports was 4.095 billion U.S. dollars, up 44.2 percent over the previous year, of which exports were 2.355 billion U.S. dollars. The absolute value of exports ranked the fourth among cities in the country, second only to Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Among them, the import and export volume of municipal foreign trade enterprises was 1.942 billion U.S. dollars, and that of the central government-owned enterprises was 2.5
