George Eliot’s ideas and her novels are closely related to 19th century scientific theories. Based on the debate about the theory of homogeneity and catastrophe in geology, this paper analyzes the change patterns in many Eliot’s novels, and draws the conclusion that Eliot is a homogeneityist. Uniformity theory to a certain extent affected the plot arrangement and characterization of the novel, and also reflected Eliot’s morality from one aspect. She values “past ” significance to human life, she hopes in ordinary people insignificant deeds to improve the society, these may be equal and equal variation theory is quite relevant.
