A semiconductor memory device was introduced in the mid-1960s as a novel memory device. It is the most representative product in large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs) and has grown at a rate exceeding the average speed of the entire semiconductor industry. Due to its advantages of fast speed, low power consumption, small size, low cost, high reliability and simple peripheral circuits, it has been aggressively attacking the entire computer storage system field in recent years. Table 1, Table 2 lists the 1976 ~ 1981 United States, Japan, Western Europe semiconductor memory market outlook, from which to see the sales profile. In 1977, sales of semiconductor memory in the United States reached 632 million U.S. dollars, compared with 70 million U.S. dollars in 1971, an increase of 9 times in six years. The proportion of semiconductor memory in the entire integrated circuit has increased from 12% in 1971 to 30% in 1977.
