中国同南海的交通首次见于载籍的,应为《史记》关于徐福求海中三神山一事。据《史记》载,秦始皇二十八年(公元前219年),齐人徐福(一作徐市)上书,言海中有三神山,名目蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲,仙人居之。请得斋戒,与童男女求之。于是遣徐福发童男女数千人,入海求之而不返。①其中所谓蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲等地,虽为方士臆说,未必可信。但齐国为今之山东省,地临海滨,当时居民于传闻中知海上别有陆地和岛屿,有名为蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲者,也未必是不可能的。《后汉书·东夷传》有云:“又有夷洲及澶洲,传言秦始皇遣方士徐福将童男女数千人入海求蓬莱神仙不得,
