In the United States, smoking is the main single cause of cancer death. It is estimated that the number of cancer deaths caused by smoking will exceed 154,000 in 1992, accounting for 30% of all cancer deaths. The total cancer death rate of smokers is 2 times higher than that of non-smokers. Heavy smokers are four times more likely. Smoking has been the cause of steadily rising cancer deaths in the United States over the past 35 years. Despite rapid advances in diagnosis and treatment, death rates have risen. Since 1950, it has been the most common cancer among men and women. Cause of death, lung cancer increased by 25%, but smoking is also the most important preventable cause of cancer today.
