The predecessor of the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran is a college. It was established in 1963 by a king and the purpose is to cultivate talents who manage the country’s oil industry. At that time there were only 67 students; in 1976 there were 1,753 students and buildings worth more than 50 million U.S. dollars. The campus covers an area of 475 hectares. This site was selected after many years of consideration. It is adjacent to the headquarters of ARAMCO, the largest oil company in the country, and can use the ready-made roads, power lines, telephone lines and sewage treatment facilities here. At the same time, a number of homes and dormitories have been built on the north side of the campus. The school complex is centered on a mosque. It is lined with libraries, classroom buildings, and classrooms on one side.
