A small amount of carbon tetrachloride significantly reduced the rate of methane-air mixture combustion, but did not significantly change the flame temperature. The role of carbon tetrachloride is mainly the nature of chemical inhibition. The effect of inhibitor concentration on the rate of combustion can be expressed in terms of the chain reaction inhibition theory: From this, it is speculated that the main effect of the inhibitor is to break the chain in the reaction. We recommend using the K value in the above formula as an indicator of inhibitor efficiency and discuss several experimental results.
