The same amount of alcohol intravenous and oral administration, the former blood alcohol concentration is higher, indicating incomplete bioavailability of oral alcohol, suggesting the existence of the first pass metabolism. First-pass metabolism of alcohol is important, and as it gets damaged, more alcohol enters the bloodstream and may cause alcoholism. In this study, the primary culture of human gastric epithelial cells was used to test the metabolism of alcohol to acetate and compared with the first pass metabolism in vivo to confirm the role of gastric alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in the first-pass metabolism of alcohol.
