In order to cultivate students’ ability of reading and appreciating literature and improve their cultural quality and artistic accomplishment, the Institute of Humanities and Art of the Chinese Academy of Arts has set up an elective course for the reading and appreciation of Chinese and foreign literary masterpieces since 2003. Over the past few years, the course has achieved good results in cultivating students’ humanistic spirit and creating a cultural atmosphere. However, as a new thing in education reform, it will inevitably face some specific and acute contradictions. These contradictions are closely related to the nature of the elective courses in literature, the way in which classes are taught, the number of hours taught, and the special conditions for teaching and learning. The fundamental contradiction in the literature elective course of the Vocational and Technical College shows a sharp conflict between the teaching content and the specific teaching objects and teaching conditions. The students entering the vocational college passed the college entrance examination. In the middle school stage, arts and sciences were divided. Some students did not have much knowledge of literary knowledge, and they couldn’t talk about literary works. After attending vocational school, there are more professional courses and more homework. There are limited time for reading literary works. Therefore, the teaching of this course has brought a certain degree of difficulty. Of course, to deal with the contradiction between teaching content and teaching objects and conditions, we must proceed from the actual situation of the vocational and technical colleges, that is, seek the unity of purpose and means, motivation and effect.
