Based on the ionospheric VTEC data acquired from GPS observations, the kalman filtering method was used to detect the anomalous ionospheric VTEC changes before and after the MS9.0 earthquake near Honshu, Japan on March 11, 2011. The test results showed that there was an abnormal increase of VTEC on the 3rd and 6th day before the earthquake, and the anomalous region was south of the epicenter and inclined to the equator, accompanied by the drift from east to west. Taking into account the solar and geomagnetic activity levels, it is considered that the anomalies of the ionosphere on the 3rd and 6th days before the earthquake may be related to this seismic activity.
