The United States Marine Systems Command plans to sign a contract with Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Systems Division to further develop the AN / WLD-1 Remote Ray Detection System (RMS). The contract included a new type of deep sonar with a high search rate to form (V) 4 and integrated the system into the AN / SQQ-89 (V) 15 Underwater Combat System. This type of underwater combat system is now equipped on the DDG-51 Flight IIA destroyers. The use of a modular design methodology and integrated launch and recovery system will allow (V) 4 to be quickly loaded into the ship with minimal modification. Other platforms under consideration include DD-963 destroyers, CG-47 cruisers, LPD and LPH amphibious assault ships, FFG-2 frigates and future SC-21 surface ships. The U.S. Navy has adopted a completely new approach to putting remote hunting thunder on the battlefield, which will allow the aircraft carrier battle group, amphibious reserve forces and single surface combatant ships to have “standard anti-mine capability.”
