This article provides the author’s own and literature results on the surface tension of carbon saturated binary metal melts. It shows that carbon is an active ingredient in the melt under study. This surface activity of carbon is believed to be responsible for the non-homogeneity of the microstructure and the graphite surface of the melt. Carbon is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of diamond under suitable conditions of P, T, using an alloy whose surface has been activated in the melt
